SO–IL stands for “Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu”. SO–IL could also have been written as “SOIL”. And soil could mean grounded. Understanding is what SO–IL stands for, from creation to life. However, the dash in between says it all, hinting at those places or spaces weighed in between, and the unexpected twist. The word ground becomes the word understanding, and the New York-based practice of Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg conceives its own architecture that not only approaches what architecture seems to be about but also takes some surprising turns. At the core of their work is an ambition to shape a stronger civic realm, which is elaborated upon in this monographic issue.
